Italy praised for its Climate Energy Plan
At the Ministry of Economic Development, Undersecretary Davide Crippa met yesterday with the European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete to exchange views on the energy strategies of Italy. They discussed the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate and the next steps that the EU and the Member States will need to make to continue the economic transformation process, in which the decarbonisation, energy efficiency and renewable sources priorities will contribute to the goals of a more environmentally-friendly economy.
“It’s been a positive meeting – stated Undersecretary Crippa – during which we took stock of the energy transition of Italy and of the EU. I was very glad to receive praises from Commissioner Cañete on the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate (PNIEC), regarded as one of the most ambitious ones among all those presented. The European Commission considers the PNIEC as well developed and in line with the necessary requirements. Commissioner Cañete spoke of a plan of a high level, well prepared and with plenty of information, which will need constant monitoring by Italy to achieve the set targets”.
The meeting was also a fruitful occasion to restate that the decarbonisation process should not cost more to some countries than to others. “Market regulatory mechanisms in some European countries – highlighted Crippa – negatively affect gas purchase price in Italy. Therefore, we’ve called for more consideration when assessing how individual Member States transpose transport costs. Decarbonisation of our production processes must provide for the possibility of receiving European or national funds, without being put under the magnifying glass as state aid. The objective is not one of the individual country, but it is also a European one. Finally, we’ve reaffirmed the requirements in relation to the Renewable Energy Sources Decree, pointing out how a 5 months’ evaluation path slows down the expected timing for the achievement of targets and objectives” – concluded Undersecretary in charge of Energy, Davide Crippa.
